Hello, Can you tell us something about yourself? How old are you, were do you live, what do you do?
Dmitry Grinberg: I am currently 18, and I live in a suburb of Chicago (Illinois, USA).
I moved here form Russia in 1999. I am a full-time student in University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign,
and I spend some of my free time programming for PalmOS.
Do you intend to create a company in the future and to earn money only by programming?
Dmitry Grinberg: Well currently my programming earns enough for me to pay for college
myself (and here in the USA college is not cheap).
What was your first PDA and how did you first begun with programming?
Dmitry Grinberg: My first PDA was a Sony N610C, which i got a few days after a friend
in school showed me his SJ-30. But i did not begin to program until my
next PDA a Zire 71. I wanted a high-resolution icon editor and was
unable to find one so I wrote IconFX in PalmPascal. I learned PalmOS
programming as I wrote that application.
Which one from your applications has been the most difficult to create so far?
Dmitry Grinberg: SkinUI by far. It replaces a very large part of the system, and many
applications do not do things as they should so there were many
caveats in making it works.
What are you currently working on and what applications are in your head?
Dmitry Grinberg: Currently I am adding a few smaller things to skinUI, and PowerDiGi.
After that I have no particular PalmOS plans. But I am learning
PocketPC, and considering powering SkinUI to Windows mobile.
Do you plan to make some of your older applications freeware?
Dmitry Grinberg: This is a possibility of course, but I haven't really put much thought
into it. The only reason my software is not free all together is that
I need to pay for college.
Do you want to write programs for other platforms, e.g. for Windows Mobile, Symbian or Linux?
Dmitry Grinberg: Yes, but nothing is anywhere near as popular as my PalmOS creations.
This is because PalmOS is the most interesting (for me) wor work with,
and as a result I know it the best. Currently I am catching up in
PocketPC programming and expect to release something interesting soon.
What do you think as a developer about the future of Palm, Palm OS and ALP?
Dmitry Grinberg: I've given up on these predictions. Everyone has their own and nobody
has any real reasons to be right. PalmOS community will be here in 5
years, that I promise you, but I cannot say the same about PalmOS
itself. Palm Inc is also not going to disappear, in the worst case
they might become just another mindless Microsoft Device maker.
What do you expect from the new system ALP?
Dmitry Grinberg: Nothing too revolutionary actually. PalmOS is good because it stayed
simple so any major changes or additions will kill what PalmOS is
really all about: simplicity.
Which one of your applications is according to the sold copies the most popular?
Dmitry Grinberg: SkinUI, warpSpeed, and UDMH are tied for first place, UnCache is
second, and PowerDiGi is catching up fast.
What 5 applications do you use on your PDA and you can't imagine your life without them?
Dmitry Grinberg:
- ToDo list (yes the default one)
- Zlauncher (I have 200+ apps installed so this is a needed app to
organize all that)
- NetFront (because Blazer is no good at browsing the Internet)
- Picsel Viewer (I use PDF for everything, and this allows me to read PDFs)
- skinUI (my eyes hurt when I look at the default PalmOS look)
What do you think about warez from the viewpoint of a developer?
Dmitry Grinberg: I love it. It is a great exercise for me to keep my software secure.
So far NOBODY had hacked any of my software that uses my new
protection system, and that is the best marketing this system can
have. You see, I offer it for sale as well.
It is unbroken yet.
Do you know the Czech Republic?
Dmitry Grinberg: Probably not as much as somebody that lives there, but I do know a
bit. Population around 10 mil people, part of EU, Prague is capital.
I think that is right (geography class back in Russia).
Thank you for Interview.
